A wonderful mother I knew
I’d like to talk about my neighbour, who I think is a wonderful mother. I have known her for several years, because my mom sometimes invites her and her family to home to have a party and I gradually know something about her parenting. First of all, she is a hardworking mother. just like many middle class families where both parents need to work and contribute to the family finance, she also cannot afford to be a housewife. On the contrary, she works very hard in order to scrape enough money together to buy an apartment in better school district. This is a big deal in China, because a better school district has a better public school, giving children a head start in the tough competition here in China. Second, she has a great sense of responsibility. She enrolls her son to many courses in cramming schools on the weekend. Maybe she sounds just like other Asian tiger mothers or a helicopter parent, but her strategy is different. Instead of jut sending her son to the school and expecting good results, she attends these lessons personally, so that she can go over the course content together with her son when they go back home. This is much more effective than what many other parents are doing because they just send their children to the weekend school so that the children can be occupied somehow and the parents can enjoy themselves elsewhere. Thanks to her dedication, her son has been doing very well at school. Thirdly, she is a very understanding mother who has an intimate knowledge of her son’s sense of insecurity. Just as I said, middle class Chinese families need to work very hard to afford a decent life. Her husband often goes on business for up to a year sometimes in Africa, so his absence is acutely felt and his presence sorely missed in this family. In many other families, the children might develop a series of psychological or behavioral problems such as playing truancy or attention deficit disorder, but this mother knows how to compensate for the lack of paternal love. She often takes her son out on an adventure, encouraging him to push the boundary of his limits. She also encourages her son to play sports like basketball with his friends. As a result of her painstaking nurturing, her son demonstrates leadership abilities from an early age on.
